Epperson & Owens traces its roots to June 1, 1895 when Samuel W. Stewart and Charles B. Stewart founded the Stewart & Stewart law firm on the corner of Main Street and First South in downtown Salt Lake City.  The firm of Epperson & Owens, P.C. continues to occupy the fifth floor of the same building where the firm originated.  David H. Epperson, who is a great grandson of Charles B. Stewart, serves as President and Senior Partner of this historic firm.

A Proud Tradition of Excellence

In the Utah Territory in 1895, Charles B. Stewart and his brother Samuel Stewart went into partnership and opened the law firm of Stewart & Stewart.   Their office was located on the fifth floor of the first Utah “skyscraper” located at the corner of Main Street and First South in Salt Lake City.   Charles wrote in his journal:

June 1, 1895
“Went in partners with Samuel at
McCornick Block, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Terms:  Share half and pay expenses equally.”

            It was a humble beginning.  Charles noted:  “We had one desk for both and 20 volumes of law books.”

 

Through the succeeding years, the law firm of Stewart & Stewart prospered and although the name of their law firm changed, the practice of law in the Stewart family continued.  In 1975, Charles Stewart’s great grandson David H. Epperson joined Stewart & Stewart’s successor law firm, then named Hanson, Wadsworth & Russon, as a law clerk, and in 1986 became the firm’s President and Senior Partner.
 
Epperson & Owens today remains in the place of its beginning and occupies the fifth floor of the Crandall Building (formerly McCornick Building).  This building, constructed of local Kyune sandstone and brick, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  The firm’s offices preserve the original stone, brick, and quarter sawn oak trim originally used in the building.  Many of its original architectural elements have been painstakingly restored, helping to return the floor to its former beauty.  Also preserved are the original Stewart law books, oak stack book cases, and early firm photographs. 

The firm of Epperson & Owens represents many of the largest insurance carriers and healthcare providers doing business within the State of Utah.  This specialty of the firm has a historic precedent, for in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s the firm began concentrating on insurance defense cases and continues to represent clients in cases of professional malpractice and liability, personal injury, automobile, and product liability. 

Epperson & Owens is proud of its long Utah heritage, AV rating (the highest available), and inclusion in the “Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers” from Martindale-Hubbell, which reflects the firm’s competency and integrity.  From its historic offices, the firm is poised for many more years of quality legal service to its clients.
